Re: WME windows media encoder locks up router

When WME is off for a week, i have no lock ups. I know the router
locks up as it is frozen both internally and externally. i can
administrate it and no internet connectivity exists internally nor does
it port direct from the outside.
So, I ordered DSL. I placed the computer on DSL and no problem...now
running 4 days straight. Then, ironically, I read that my cable
provider (my other ISP) has been having problems for the last 3 months
and was keeping it quiet until a massive revolt by the masses exposed
it.
I suspect the cable ISP was the issue... but ill hold off for a while
before pointing the finger soley at them.

I also have a WRT54G and I stream three streams out of my servers with no
problems. I don't reboot the servers for months and I constantly have
clients logged in.
How can you be sure that the WME is causing the router to stop functioning?
Have you tried just letting the network sit with no WME activity and does
the same occur?

Just as an experiment (I realise this will take a long time to "test")
If you go to the Encoder, Properties, Advanced : On that page is a
Packet Size parameter of Auto, 16000 bytes default.
Does it work any better / differently if you change that to say 12000
bytes custom packet size ?

How exactly are you determining the router locks up ? If you connect
another PC into the wired or wireless parts, can the second PC access
the network as normal (i.e. we're making sure it's not the PC itself
that's losing track of the router...)

WME encoding will eventually lock up my router. I've tried various
D-LINK routers and LINKSYS units, all without success. My
configuration is:
Insight Cable Modem with D-Link wbr2310 router (wireless is turned
off). I have 9 other PCs on the same LAN as the WME computer.
However, they are idle more often than not when the router locks up.
WME used to work flawlessly. In fact, it would run for weeks at a
time. I 'PUSH' my stream to a provider, but i've tried a 'PULL' and it
still locked up. I've switched PCs and install WME and still.... the
router locks up. Orginally the stream was pushed at 320K...i kept
slowing it down thinking i was overloading something...eventually to a
push of 129K. Still, it locks up.
Currently, WME might run for 1 day to 2 or just a few hours. The
router locks up, freezes and requires that power be cycled to restore
it to operation. Over time, it is getting worse.
What's weird is that it used to work fine. Insight has been------------------------------------------------
'rebuilding' their system and i'm wondering if they could in some way
be the cause? Has anyone had this type of issue? any solutions or
ideas?
