Re: No Video from encoder

YES! It is working with no tape in the camcorder and using firewire cable
(and camcorder in CAMERA MODE). Thanks so much Neil !
I will use this as an workaround until the USB is fixed in a future release
hopefully!

Thank you for trying to help Neil. Appreciate the time.
I tested bia Fireware versus USB. This works only if the camcorder is in
PLAY mode (versus CAMERA mode, that is used for recording).
When the camcorder is in PLAY mode, the streming works fine, but the problem
is htat I DO NOT WANT to stream what is on the miniDV tape, I WANT to stream
what I see in real-time. Once I set the camcorder to be in CAMERA mode, I can

If you haven't tried it with no tape in the camera, now's the time to
do that experiment. Many cameras will send the image sensor content
when in play mode *as long* as there's no tape in the device.

see myself in the Input area, but after "Start streaming" , the streaming
stops with next error message in WME 9 log "Either the end of the tape has
been reached or there is no tape. check the device and tape (0xC00D1BAE)"
If I try to edit my WME 9 setting and reselect the "SONY DV Device" I get
the next error message "The setting of the selected device does not support
control for playback tapes (0XC00D1B91)"
Please note thatr at the same time, I was able to use Pinnacle Studio and
record real-time video showing myself in front of PC just fine, so all my
cable connections were fine.
Therefore, the Firewire does not help me to stream what I see with my
camcorder in real-time (but only play what is on cassete... not a desired
option)
The USB is not an option for still shots, the USB it is able to transmit
real-life video via MSN, Yahoo and via WME 9 in Input tab, I do see myself!
The issue is that after "Start encoding" I see a black screen in both Input
and Output screens. This should work. Is either a WME 9 bug or
compatibility\limitation with USB streaming. The proof for that is that I
made it work after few attempts to start streaming but only if my CPU is 100%
busy with other work. I think WME 9 does not wait enough for USB transmisison
to initialize, anyway, as may have been tested by MS on Virtual PCs or slow
computers, but does not work on a Intel P4 3.0MHZ, which is now 1.5 years
old, but may have not existed when WME 9 was released. Are there any Service
Packs for WME 9? I could not find any on the MS site.
Coming back to my previus posting, I am willing to work with a debug
enginner and provide needed remote debug access or I can try any new patch or
dll, etc.
Thanks ina dvance for help,
Ovi

I think USB is normally used for still image capture in most DV cams.
Does it work better if you connect the Firewire cable (also called
iLink by Sony) from the camera to the PC instead ?

I have the same problem. My SONY camera model is DCR-HC21 NTSC (is not a web
cam). I can use it fine via USB with both Yahoo and MSN. I can also see the
input area fine in Windows Media Encoder 9, THE PROBLEM IS THAT once I press
"Start encoding" the video in both input and output areas become black (no
image). Once I stop encoding, the video appears on the input area. I have
streamed succesfully from ATI TV Source and also from a MPEG file, but
streaming from a USB source, seems not to work as intended.
However, I was able to make it twice work (see my image in both inout and
output areas), this can be reproduced after few attempts but ONLY when the
CPU was 100% (very busy for a while) by some other running programs...
Any Clues? Does Windows Media Encoder have any tools to debug or collect
more info?
I am willing to use my PC as a guineea pig and install any debuggers /
patches from authorized source.

I did, no video, only the audio played.

If I'm not encoding, the video from the camera shows on the input screen.
When I try to encode (pressing the record/encode button), the video from the
input goes blank.

Arrgg! Why is it nothing ever works the first time???

Did you try to save the file and see if there is any video?

I'm trying to download from a sony dv cam through USB. I have XP Pr0 sp2.

When I play the video from the camera, I see it on the input side but not
through the encoder. The audio records fine.

During setup, the video device is "Sony Digital Imaging". Do I need to
install a codec? If so where and how do I get it?

Otherwise, HELP??
