no sound from wme9

when I stream a video with audio from the computer running encoder 9, the computer receiving the stream plays the sound fine, but
the computer pushing out the stream is silent. I can see the audio levels going up and down in the encoder program as the file
plays, but no sound comes out of the speakers. I've played a stream to several friends on the internet and they can all hear the
audio fine. I can't see anything in the encoder options that allows me to hear the audio on the computer I'm using to stream out.
I read at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/encoder/faq.aspx
to check my mixer settings but all seems fine. Other programs play sound just fine, but wme9 is silent.
