WME9 can't find driver for USB microphone

I have a USB microphone that uses the standard Windows USB Audio drivers.
This microphone has been working correctly. It tests fine in the sound
control panel and works in apps like Sound Recorder.
When trying to select the USB microphone in WME9, however, I get an error:
No specified device driver is present (0xC00D0072)
I've looked around the net quite a bit to find a solution and have come up
empty. It seems that there have been some driver issues in the past, but
back in the days of DirectX Media and WME 7. I'm running XP SP2 with DirectX
9.0c. I reinstalled DirectX and uninstalled and reinstalled the USB Audio
drivers, but with no luck.
Any advice on helping WME9 find the USB Audio driver?
