That's about right. A WMV/WMA file is pretty much ready to stream, and will
stream if it's popped into a Media Services PublishingPoint. Your encoding
tool might be able to make the file with different properties, such as
making it a MultipleBitRate "MBR" file that will playback at different
resolutions depending on the connection properties of the remote viewers,
but without the file being managed by that optional service those extra
streams won't be worth making.

The good thing is that Windows Media Services is a free part of Windows
Server2000/2003 Standard & Enterprise Edition, so if they are running that
server operating system it's not going to cost them anything but a few
seconds and a handful of mouse-clicks to let your viewers view the file as a
stream.

Caveat: If you had a media files that were really popular and you wanted to
stream to lots of people concurrently on the internet then bandwidth and
hardware costs would increase, but it sounds like you're doing a more
limited offering so just flipping on the service and copying the file to a
PublishingPoint would likely be the whole effort in your case.

And once your clients are done watching it, the server people just have to
do a simple right-click to shut off the service till it's needed again.

The hardest thing about getting this basically started is getting over the
feeling that it has to be more difficult. I set up my first system 3 times
because I was sure that I must have been missing something, fact was that
there really wasn't all that much to it (at least, basically). MS has done
a great job with it.

Thanks for your help smith,
unfortunately all this stuff is beyond my control or expertise, but I'll
pass the
information onto the administrators of the clients website.

Just to clarify, our wmv is 'downloading' and so it appears that there isn't
anything we can do in our export settings to specify any download or
progressive download actions. If this is the case then as I understand any
issues need to be resolved with the deliveery of the wmv and not the wmv
file itself? Please teel me if I'm wrong.
