Thank you for your reply, Manilla Dell on the WM Encoder news group...

The solution I am implementing provides a one step, DVD disc to AVI (Divx) conversion without having
to run separate decrypting, VOB consolidation, etc. steps.

However, I am finding that a one time transfer of the DVD to hard drive allows the conversion
process to run much faster, especially for multipass encoding.

For one time transfer to hard disk, I found Smart-ripper to be much easier to use than DVD-Decrypter.

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/smartripper.cfm

DVD Decrypter provides the ability to create and burn ISO images of DVDs, which I have not seen from
any other package.

The conversion software I selected is ImToo's DVD ripper (http://www.imtoo.com) along with DIVx's
codec (www.divx.com).

ImToo's software allows a lot of control over the conversion process and includes documentation for
all the features, something lacking in most of the other conversion programs I've tried (WM Ecoder
does provide good documentation). ImToo also responds quickly to questions with very good answers,
and a Big thank you to them for directing me to the Divx codec.

The DIVx encoder is awesome and they provide an excellent user guide that not only explains the
software, but the underlying principles as well. You can find "The Official Divx support guide" at:
http://www.divx.com/support/guides/DivXGuide51.pdf

I was able to achieve excellent results in minimal learning time with the Divx codec, and the output
files are the best quality to file size ratio that I have been able to achieve with MPEG1or2or4 or WM9.

WM Player can play the Divx files if the codec is installed, and there is a free version of the
codec available at the Divx web site.

For those that have been following the thread, this story: DVD to Divx (instead of WM9); ends very
happy for me. I'm able to consolidate 4Gbyte training videos on DVD to 650 Mbyte videos on CD with
no loss of the original VHS quality. This saves a lot of $$ on hard drives for archiving as well as
bandwidth and burning costs for distribution of the training content.

Finally, Thank you to all the people that offered assistance on this forum. It was a big help.

Regards,
Tom
