Fop my friend, I bought a wireless card for his Mac G3 with OS 8.6.
The ebay listing and the seller referred me to a url where I
downloaded a driver file, that ends in .sit.hqx .

Replying to my own post, to help out anyone else with no mac
experience who asks:

It turned out it wasn't obvious what to do with this. The file name
ended in .sit.hqx and clicking on the file did nothing. I thought
maybe renaming it would help. Since I didn't have time to learn how
to rename a file on a Macintosh, I renamed it on my windows machine,
just getting rid of the .hqx ending. After that, clicking on it
worked.

At one point, the icon on the desktop changed into another icon but I
didn't notice that, and couldn't find something to click on.
Eventually I noticed, and clicking on it iirc installed the software.

Using the software was also a bit of a problem but I don't know if
that is because of the Mac structure or not. The wireless card didn't
come with instructions. But it works now. Very happy.

What do I do with it?

Is it going to be obvious how to install this, for us? My experience
is only in Windows and the owner of the computer told me tonight that
he doesn't know how to do it, doesn't even know what I'm talking
about.

I wouldn't be asking before I tried to do it, but it is the driver
file for a wireless card, and the card won't arrive by mail until
Friday or Saturday, and my friend is leaving on his trip on Sunday!
So we won't have much time to fix the computer up.

The card arrived a day early, Thursday, but I needed time on Thursday,
Friday, Saturday, and maybe Sunday to get it working. I was wrong
about the day my friend was leaving. It was today, Monday.

More below.

I gather that .sit means it has to be decompressed, have its files
extracted, and I guess there is a way to find the file and do this.

I know that Windows copied a lot from Mac. In windows there is a
program to display a list of all the files. How do I do this on a
Mac?

After I extract the files, in Windows I would click on the .exe file,
and it would run and use the other files to complete the process.
Does the Mac file I want to click on end in .exe, or something else?

If I have trouble and you're not here to hold my hand, is there
internal Help in version 8.6 that would cover stuff like this? I
think for Windows the answer is No. So that's why I'm asking you all.
:-)

John, The help worked great. It even drew red circles and red arrows,
which my friend with the mac desktop had not seen before. I only used
it when I saw a question mark in a diamond on one screen, but if
there's a next time, I'll try the it in the top menu bar.

If you are inclined to email me
for some reason, remove NOPSAM :-)
