Ah, at least I think you've found your problem.
If that policy hasn't been disabled then you will not be able to use Mac
OS X's built-in SMB client at all to connect to a Windows Server 2003
server. The only alternative is to use an SMB client that is compatible
with the policy and that would be either Dave or ADmitMac, which are
both from Thursby.
Unfortunately, these are your only two alternatives unless you have a
Mac OS X server that can act as the host for the home directory.
