Re: Video to mpg or DVD

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

My camcorder is an older one with the small vhs cassettes that you put into
an adapter to view in a VCR. So my only option at this point is to copy
from a vcr to my computer.
In the past, I used windows and a Dazzle adapter which allowed me to plug my
vcr into the adapter and the adapter was plugged into the pc. The Mac is
new territory for me and the main reason I bought it was for the graphics
and video capabilities which everyone said was superior to pc. So far, I¹m
finding it not so easy.

Hi guys,

Transfer VHS to DVD:

Option 1 use computer:
* you will need a ?digital video camcorder¹ with video in (e.g. You can use
Digital or D8, mini DV etc) - this will encode the analogue video into a DV
stream which the Macintosh accepts and can be imported in iMovie, after
importing in iMovie
* or you buy a external analogue to digital converter like the one from
Canopus ( http://www.canopus.com/products/ADVC55/index.php)
* you can export to iDVD and burn the imported onto DVD (mind the duration
though , normally up to 2 hrs video will fit onto one single layer DVD and up
to 60 mins on a video CD per previous posting, also consider PopCorn (from
Roxio as well- the makers of Toast).

Option 2 - buy a video with built in DVD
* e.g: Philips VCR DVD/VCR Player DVP3100V/05 with Video dubbing, this type
of VCR can be bought in UK and I found the model details on a US web site.

In the past, I have used a DV camcorder to transfer the VHS video to the
computer.
A two step process.
Then iMovie & iDVD to create the DVD.
I think you still need something like Toast to make a VCD.
I have used ffmpegx to create mpeg1 files.
