Re: Mac & SBS 2003

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi Wayne,

Tiger 10.4.4 has significant network improvements. You can now use webdav to make connections (very fast ones). Upgrading may help you (no promises, but I've had much better network performance with 10.4.4).

I have a Mac which uses SMB file sharing and Entourage in a SBS 2003 domain - both of which seem to be working fine. The Mac itself however slowly but surely comes to a grinding halt and requires restarting after a period of use. Internet also seems slower than normal.

Any suggestions as to why the Mac would be suffering (prior to SBS it worked fine - Quark/photoshop etc)??

Mac OS 10.3.9/512Mb, SBS 2003 std, Dlink DSL-G604T to network and share internet.

Hi Wayne!

Your Mac won't be affected simply by having an SBS server on your network. Therefore, I'm assuming you're referring to some sort of interaction you're having with the server (file sharing, mail server, Internet gateway or something else). Correct?

What were you using prior to your SBS server and how were you using it?

Thanks Bill,

Previously just a MAC & Ibook used a Linksys router for internet access only (wired & wireless) - it's a small design co. No issues with response on internet access or application usage. Seemed to have IPv6 setup as well !?!

SBS server was then added for file/email & website serving using MS article "Connecting Macintosh OS X 10.3 & higher clients to a Windows SBS 2003 network". (internal domain name .office so skipped step 3). Router changed to Dlink DSL-G604T, SMB connection to single SBS share and Entourage configured (there was an issue with the SBS Certificate installation in the Key Chain, but it still all seemed to work OK). The SBS side of things seems to be working without an issue.

Since then, running the normal design apps on the Mac now becomes tedious, internet access is slow, all requiring a restart to clear the issue.

I have considered removing the DNS reference to the SBS server on the Mac incase the Mac was passing everything through the SBS box, but other than setting up IPv6 again can't really see why Mac would be choking after a couple of hours work !!

Any assistance would be much appreciated !!

thanks again

WS..
