Dvd player corrupted?

For some funny reason my dvd player (on 15" powerbook G4) is now playing
movies, not crystal clear with stunning sharpness as in the past, but with
strings of vertical lines running up and down across the screen. In colors--
green, red, etc.

Just recently upgraded to OS 10.4.1. DVD was working fine before that. Any
idea what the problem might be?

Note: I just downloaded and installed "DVD Playback Update 4.6.1" but when I
"get info" on the dvd player, it does not indicate any modification or
upgrade (to original 4.6) whatsoever. Why not??? And didn't fix problem.

Thanks for any help...!
