I would partially agree with both of you. HP's drivers for their newer
printers are much more Mac aware than what they were 5 or 6 years ago. I
have an HP LaserJet 2300 that I purchased about 2 years ago that has worked
great from day 1 with my Mac. And, I recently purchased an HP 1012 LaserJet
that works perfectly with my wife's new eMac. They are both pretty much
plug-and-play, and the 1012 even states on the box that it comes with OS X
drivers (and it does). The earlier printers are the problem. The legacy
driver I downloaded from HP is a Postscript driver. Nice, but whenever my 4
Plus sees the data coming at it, it goes into the invalid personality mode.
In any event, I finally got my printer working last night. I hooked the 4
Plus up to my Linksys print server. Once I reset the spooler for the
printer port on the PS, the printer regained its functionality using the
GIMP driver and is printing fine.
One final word about HP printers. Their might durable for crap. On
average, my HP printers have been around a long time (at least 10 years for
my older ones), and are still working, and I can usually get a year's worth
of use out of one of their cartridges. Whereas printers and cartridges from
other companies seem to need to be replaced a lot quicker. If you can work
around the drivers for the older printers, and make sure before you buy that
HP does have OS X drivers for the printer model you're interested in, then
the ROI on their printers is pretty good.
