I have a PC at home (mostly for games) and a Mac G5 at work. I installed
Virtual PC 7 on my G5 becaue I don't want to have 2 computers in my
office, but I want to run some PC programs from my Mac. Virtual PC for XP
Pro runs well on a G5, except for programs that require a graphic card,
which either don't run at all or run slowly. For example, Heroes of Might
and Magic III runs, but only just fast enough to be tolerable, but Rise of
nations won't even start.
The System Info control panel thinks it's a 686 compputer running at 532
MHz which is not bad, but does not compare well to a 2 GHz PC with a 3D
card.
As for Chess programs, CT Art 3.0 runs fine, as well as Bangiev's White
repertoire, but Fritz8 crashes when using infinite analysis (but the Fritz
5.32 engine that comes with it seems to run OK, and can analyze 10 moves
deep in a few seconds - not as fast as Fritz8 on the PC, but pretty
good).Bridge programs like OKBridge run fine too.
On a G5 at least, VP7 is very stable, and I haven't had any crashes yet
after a few days of use. forget about using it for games requiring a fast
3D card, but otherwise, it can be a valid option.
