A question for you: Are you running Mac OS 9 in Classic mode under Mac
OS X or is your Mac actually booted into Mac OS 9?

If you're running Mac OS 9 in Classic mode then you need to know that
although the Classic environment depends on some of the networking
functions of Mac OS X, it still uses some of its own networking. This
includes the setup for Hosts files. An entry in an old blog of mine may
help you <http://homepage.mac.com/theoriginalmeck/blog/>. Scroll to the
very bottom entry.

Hope this helps! billl
