There is obviously some conflict between my Mac (POWERBOOK80) and
my PC
IE browser that prevents the IE browser from finding the DNS
server. I
have DNS and server addresses set to "automatic".

I have read all the Microsoft kb's on the subject and tried all they
suggest, but to no avail. My patience is wearing thin so if there is
anyone out there who could help set me straight on this I would be
eternally grateful.

I should add that I am running VPC 7.0.2 on the latest OS 10.4.7 on
a
PowerBook through a
D-Link router on a broadband ethernet connection.



Add a DNS server in Windows.

4.2.2.2 is a public DNS server owned by Yahoo.com and works quite well
in VPC.

Thanks Paul, I did what you suggest but the IE still cannot find a web
page.

However, I kept adding 4.2.2.2 as my DNS and WINS server, although I
note that the Stanford case uses different addresses at the end (i.e.
when adding WINS servers etc.)

The above logs suggest that my problem is some sort of conflict between
my Mac and the PC IE, both of which claim to be the "Master Browser".

Any further ideas?

Can you ping 4.2.2.2 from Windows? If so, can you ping www.yahoo.com?

As I said, my Local Area 2 Status icon in the Task Bar tells my
"Connected". The problem is that IE cannot find this "Connection" due
to some sort of name conflict or other such where two items compete to
be the "Master Browser".

I looked at my "Event Log" for today (after booting up IE) and it reads:

Error: The master browser has received a server announcement from the

YESTERDAY (i.e. before I switched to the yahoo proxy), my Event log
gave me the following after trying my IE:

Error: A duplicate name has been detected on the TCP network. The IP
address of the machine that sent the message is in the data. Use
nbtstat -n in a command window to see which name is in the conflict
state. Source: NetBT

Warning: The browser has received a server announcement indicting that
the computer MACWINDOWS is a master browser, but this computer is not a
master browser. Source: MRxSub

MACWINDOWS is the name of my Windows2000 VM

When I ran nbtstat -n I got the following:

Do not worry about the browser election at this point. It is NOT
hindering your ability to ping anything. Something on the Mac side is
blocking it (something like Little Snitch?). Anyway, restart your Mac
OS in Safe Boot and then try pinging from Windows.

Thanks Paul. Since posting the above I tried restarting my Mac with
Shift key down and I had no trouble connecting to the Internet. Only
trouble was I had no sound. Anyway, I then decided to create a new user
on my machine and installed VPC 7.0.2 with Windows 2000 Pro on that.
Wow! No trouble at all. Connected immediately to the Internet.

I can only conclude that I have some extension or other in my main
(admin) user account which is interfering with the PC. However, there
being no Extensions Manager in OS X I have no way of knowing which. I
have decided now to simply use Windows from my second user account in
future.

However, I do have a question about this new setup. I had an old
Connectix version of Windows 2000 pro on an external drive, and when I
created a new virtual machine on my PowerBook (new user account) I did
it by way of upgrading from that Windows file on this external drive.
Now I have my Virtual PC List in my new account's documents folder with
an alias pointing to the external drive. I would like to copy this over
to my Mac HD (i.e. to replace the one that was giving me the trouble),
but am not sure whether this is possible. In other words, I would like
to be able to use my second (new) user account, but access my Windows
on my internal HD. I find accessing it from an external drive slows
things down a lot.

I notice you cannot just create an alias of Windows (being read only).

Any ideas on that?

Simply copy the Windows 2000 file from the external drive to the
Virtual PC List folder under Documents for the second user account. If
it will not allow you to copy it, then change the permissions on the
file to allow everyone access, copy it over, then change
permissions/ownership to the second user account. Another way is to
share the virtual machine so that ALL user accounts on the Mac can
access it. The steps are listed below:

**Copy the virtual machine from the external drive to the Virtual PC
List folder under Documents in the Administrator user account
first......then start at step 3. Be SURE that Windows is 'not
running'!!

While signed in to the Administrator Account

1. Install virtual pc on the admistrator account and create the virtual

machine(Guest operating system)
2. When this is finished quit virtual pc and make sure the guest
operating system
is in a "not running" state.
3. Navigate to the virtual pc list folder on the
mac.(harddisk->users->user you are
working with->documents->virtual pc list)
4. Locate the virtual machine you have created and drag it to the
shared
folder(hardisk->users->shared)
5. Now we need to change permissions on the file itself. Ctrl+Click on
the VM and
select Get Info
6. In the window that comes up look for ownership and permissions and
click the
arrow pointing to the right
7. This will show you what permissions you have which should be read
and write.
Below that there should be another arrow pointing the right that says
details
8. Click the arrow and at the bottom it should say others. Click the
drop down
arrow next to it change it to Read and Write.
9. In some cases you may have to change the permissions on the
basedrive file
located within the VM
10. Changing permissions on this file is the same as changing it for
the VM
itself.(To access this file ctrl+click on the VM and show package
contents.(The
file is usually named Disk1 or it may be the name of the operating
system)
11. Now we need to make an alias(shortcut) for the Vm and place in the
virtual pc
list folder.
12. To do this ctrl+click on the VM and select make alias.(The keyboard
shortcut
for it is command+L)
13. Now that the alias is created drag and drop the alias in the
virtual pc list
folder.
14. Completly log out of the admistrator account (do not use fast user
switching to
go between this account and the other accounts on the Mac)

All other users

Virtual pc will already be installed on all other users after the first

installation on the administrator account so no setup is required.
Virtual pc will be located in the applications folder
To allow all other users to use the same guest operating system as the
administrator account we need to make an alias and place it in the
virtual pc
list
1. Log into the next user account
2. Navagate to the shared folder(Harddisk->users->shared
3. The original VM will be listed there and you will have permissions
to access
it
4. Make an alias of the original, same as before(Highlight the VM,
Ctrl+Click on it
and select make alias)
5. Drag and drop the alias into the virtual pc
list(harddisk->users->user you are
working with->documents->virtual pc list

You will now be able to access the same virtual machine in two separate
users
For more than 2 users just repeat steps for all other users
