Re: How can I create a new virtual machine?

The Windows disks included with VPC are not bootable. You cannot
manually install Windows from those disks. You need to install the
Windows from VPC using the VPC installer, I don't remember if you can
do a custom install and just install Windows without VPC in VPC 5, but
you need to install the whole app with Windows if you cannot just
install Windows via the VPC installer. There are a couple of
documents on my site for this, although they aren't directly for VPC5,
you should be able to use them to import your VPC5 Windows into your
newer version of VPC.

Also, you can install VPC5 on any Mac, it's just that you cannot RUN
it on G5s.

I have been trying (unsuccessfully, so far) to create a new virtual machine
(a PC) in a new user account in my iMac.

I have the original VPC5 CDs (i.e. a VPC5 installer disk, plus a Win2000
disk), and the original upgrade CD for VPC6.

However, the instructions (in the Help files of VPC6) for creating a new
virtual machine are not working for me. At the very end of this posting, I
have appended the (very brief) instructions from the Help files.

To start the procedure contained in instruction number 3, I inserted the
Win2000 disk from my VPC5 disks.
When I get to the last line of instruction number 3 (i.e. "Press any key to
boot from CD-ROM."), the virtual machine does not boot from the CD, and the
same message is then repeated in the black screen of the empty virtual
machine, i.e.:
"OS not found
Install an OS on this hard drive."

By the way, it makes no difference whether I "press any key" (a) after the
restart or (b) during the restart.

That's where I'm stuck.
Can anyone help, please?

Following, are the instructions excerpted from the Help files in VPC 6:

1
Manually create an empty PC.
For details, see: Adding a new virtual machine.***
2
Start up the virtual machine. You will receive an error message that the
drive image is not bootable.
3
Insert the bootable Windows CD-ROM.
(Let it auto mount.)
Restart the PC from the Control menu
Press any key to boot from CD-ROM.
4 The Windows Setup program will then take you through the setup process.

*** To manually create an empty PC:
1
Open the Window menu and choose Virtual PC List.
2
Click New.
3
Select Create a PC manually, and click the right arrow.
4
Select Install an operating system onto an empty PC, and click the right
arrow.
5
Select the operating system you intend to install on the PC, and click the
right arrow.
6
Select the memory setting for the new PC, and click the right arrow.
7
Specify whether Undo Drives is enabled for the PC, and click the right
arrow.
8
Enter a new PC name.
9
If desired, click Change Location, and select a location for the PC
configuration document.
10
Click the right arrow.
11
Review the new PC specifications, and click Create.
