OK, understand, that's fine, but eventually as software moves on, you have
to draw lines in the sand and not support old hardware.

Secondly, if you want to run server software, do it on real PC
hardware! Running PC-based server software on your Mac through
Virtual PC is just plain inefficient, attributing to poor
performance, and for certain Macintosh models, can reduce the
life of your system through excessive wear and tear.

Thirdly... SQL Server is just a back-end to a database server...
the front-end can be made to run on Virtual PC just like any
PC application that is network-aware. And if the product is
based around SQL Server Express, surely it could be re-deployed
on a real SQL Server platform instead. Sounds to me that the
product is poorly architected in the first place!

NO, it couldn't, we use the new SQL Express feature of user instances which
is designed to allow Least Priveledged User Account access rights to the
databases they need to use. This feature ONLY works when SQL Server is run on
the same physical PC as the client application. This is one of the VALID
scenarios for SQL Express.

Hi all, just wondering when/if Virtual PC for the Mac is going to be
upgraded
to emulate a Pentium III instead of just a Pentium II.

I ask because the company I am consulting to have produced a
shrink-wrapped
peice of software for PC that uses SQL Server Express, and from a few
discussions on this forum, SQL Server 2005 will NOT work on Virtual PC for
MAC because it requires a Pentium III or greater.

This is the only reason we aren't able to offer our small but vocal group
of
Mac users the ability to run our latest product on a Virtual PC on their
Macs.
