Yes, copy the vm to the external drive. Delete it from the
Documents/Virtual PC List folder. Then create an alias pointing to the
location of the vm on the external drive and place the alias in the
Documents/Virtual PC List folder.

I would also suggest creating a copy of the vm and place it in another
folder for backup.

***Note*** When you do all of the above, make sure that Windows is in a
'Not Running' state.
