I have a small Linksys Router that performs the same function. I
chose to configure static addresses and hosts files so I could access
my Apache virtual host (too many virtuals :^) ) by name and not have
to use DDNS

I had problems with the VPC networking until I hard coded the nameserver
address into the Networking Control Panel. I'm running BIND as a forwarding
nameserver on the OS X side and I really don't understand why I had to hardcode
that, but names started being resolved after I did that. That led me to
configuring a static address on the OS X side so I wouldn't need to reconfigure
nameservice on the VPC whenever the host was issued a different IP.

I'm not certain, but I think that the VPC and the OS X host share the same
MAC address, which would explain much...

One more data point. I unplugged the wire and no traffic would pass
between the virtual pc and the host without a cable and I presume the router.

Good Luck
