Perfect, thank you! I had the same problem-- many, many sites were
completely inaccessible. Your repair guided me through, and when I
rebooted XP Home, I got 22 Windows Updates! Also, finally, I could
update my free virus checker from grisoft, and update to Firefox 1.0.4.

Now, I don't want to be a Mac fanatic, but please -- tell me why this
repair is so completely unintuitive? There was zero possibility that I
would figure this out on my own.

But I digress. Thank you again.
