To everyone who has replied:
Wow. What a can of worms.
Let's keep the personal attacks out of this, okay?
For the record, I *love* Virtual PC. It has been running flawlessly on
my G4 dual-processor Mac for several months. I have had no problems
running it whatsoever. It runs fast, it connects beautifully to my
cable modem, it prints perfectly to my USB printer, it runs and
installs automatic updates to XP, all without me having to do much of
anything at all except regular Windows stuff (installing printers,
etc.).
However, when I ran across a problem with the XP operating system
running on VirtualPC, I wanted to check it out in an effort to be fair
in my review. Be assured that I am making no assumptions whatsoever -
this includes contacting MS support via email and telephone.
In all fairness, please make no assumptions regarding my review. My
posting was limited to one particular question and by no means
encompassed the entirety of my review of VirtualPC. Since I have not
written my review yet, and thus no one responding to my post has read
said review, charges of bias are quite unwarranted.
I've received some good information from several replies, and I thank
you very much. I do wish that the helpful information I've received was
documented by Microsoft in some way for VPC. It is inconceivable to me
that the MS operating system running on VPC will not, at some point,
become corrupt and I find lack of documentation regarding this issue,
as well as lack of a separate copy of XP for repair purposes, to be a
downfall of the product.
I also find the documentation accompanying VPC to be skimpy and lacking
in full explanations of many of the features of the product. However,
this is not a problem specific to Microsoft - most software
documentation is very poor. For the most part, how to use features of
VPC are documented; however, what these features are *for* is not
documented well.
Again, thanks for all the replies and I will continue to look for more,
hopefully more specific answers to the issues I brought up.
