Hi, I am new to this group and to GPS usage, and maybe I can help, and
maybe be helped. Three weeks ago I bought a Garmin GPSMAP76CS and
tried to connect it with my two macs. Here are the results up to now;
1) PowerBook G4, 15" titanium running OS 9.2.2 and VPC 6.1.1 with
Windows 98 and MapSource 6.5 + GPS connected through USB port: works
like a charm and is fast. I was able to update the firmware on the GPS
to version 3.70. I hate having to reboot from OS 9.2.2, but it works.
2) PowerBook G4, 15" titanium running OSX 10.3.8 and VPC 6.1.1 with
Windows 98 and MapSource 6.5 (same virtual machine as in 1 but run
under OSX)) + GPS connected serially with Keyspan serial adaptor
USA19HS using first method described in Keyspan manual + no mouse
connected to the computer: worked fine up to now with a transfer from
the GPS that took a little more than 5 minutes (long tracks and
waypoints). Slow but it works.
3) Same as in 2) but with a mouse connected to the computer:
communication aborted a few times. Longest transfer I was able to do
from the GPS lasted 4 minutes. Could not accomplish the 5 minute
transfer as in 2) (same tracks and waypoints); When I remove the
mouse, it works fine. I did not test this extensively though.
Conclusion: a mouse connected to the PowerBook seems to somehow
interfere with the communication link. Strange!
4) Dual G5 running OSX 10.3.8 and VPC 7.0.1 with XP Pro and MapSource
6.5 + GPS connected through USB port: Windows XP Pro sees the GPS and
identifies it properly as a Garmin USB GPS in the device manager BUT
MapSource cannot see it?? Seems to be a problem with MapSource. We?re
almost there!
5) Same as in 4), but with the GPS connected serially through the
Keyspan adaptor: Windows XP Pro and MapSource see the GPS without
difficulty, transfer initiates but interrupts almost immediately. I
have tried again and again to transfer the data from the GPS, but it
just won?t work. MapSource keeps on giving me an error message and
telling me that if this persists, I may have to turn off and on the
GPS. It does not work. Again, close but not there yet!
6) MacGPS Pro with Keyspan adaptor on both computers on OSX: works
fine.
If anyone finds how to establish a reliable communication between G5
and MapSource, please just let me know, the G5 is much more fun to
work with than OS9 on the PowerBook. I read somewhere on the internet
in the past two weeks that the IOGEAR serial adaptor may be more
reliable than the Keyspan, but the post didn?t say if the computer was
a PowerBook or a G5 or another desktop Mac. the Keyspan works with my
PowerBook but not with the G5 in my case; would it be the same with
the IOGEAR? If someone knows, please let me know. Also, will changing
the communication parameters in the serial interface help (stop bits,
Xon/Xoff, and all that stuff)? If the mouse really interferes with the
communication, is there a way to disable it during the transfer?
Voilà! Thanks for your inputs.
Daniel
