Excuse? No, its more likely a combination of the underlying OS (BSD
based) and Apple's implementation of the 802.11 spec is stricter than
many others.
VPC on PC rarely has this problem either, when it does its related to
the NIC drivers and updating to newer NIC drivers usually solves the
problem.
Its not really relevant to compare VMWare to VPC-Mac...unless you've
got a special copy of VM Ware Workstation that runs on OS X. Oh, and
wireless bridging for VMW only works consistently on Windows hosts
(not Linux or BSD hosts), see below...
Using Bridged Networking with a Wireless NIC
Question
My virtual machine cannot access the network using bridged
networking. I am using a wireless network interface card. What is
wrong?
Answer
Bridged networking with a wireless Ethernet adapter is supported in
VMware Workstation 4 and GSX Server 3 on Windows hosts. If you are
using other VMware products on a Windows host, you may want to upgrade
to Workstation 4 or GSX Server 3 in order to gain this capability.
If your host has a wireless network adapter, you cannot use bridged
networking in VMware Workstation 3 or lower, in current versions of
VMware Workstation or GSX Server on Linux hosts, or in VMware GSX
Server 2 or lower. Under these products, if you want to run virtual
machines on a host that uses wireless Ethernet adapters, you need to
configure your virtual machines to use NAT or host-only networking.
