Actually Windows page size is 4Kbytes or if you've enabled large page sizes
then you can get 4Mbyte pages.
But that isnt really what your asking about - your asking about Page File
size.
The optimal page file size isnt always one size fits all, and this has been
a source of more arguments than I can recall on a Windows system.
What I might use on a million dollar Windows server to run mission critical
enterprise applications with specific requirements is not going to be the
same as an emulated desktop Windows system running under VPC.
That being said, I expect others to disagree with my recommendation here on
VPC.
What I do for WinXP on VPC is this:
I turn OFF virtual memory. That's right I give it 0.
Since I make sure that the amount of RAM I have allocated to VPC is
sufficient to get the job done, I have no need for Virtual Memory.
Use of virtual memory will slow you down. VPC needs all the help not to slow
you down.
Okay, but if you have no choice and you need more RAM than you can give VPC
then my next recommendation is to set the initial and maximum page file size
to the same value. i.e. to your maximum value.
The way you have it as specified means that Windows will resize between
these two points as necessary given the varying load. Setting them to the
same size means you arent paying the extra penalty that resizing will bring.
So how big would you set that up I guess in VPC would be up to the amount
you need for the application load you'll put it under, and no more.
This isnt necessarily what I'd recommend on a real Windows machine, but then
I've used everything from build your own at home to Windows systems with
hundreds of Gigabytes of RAM, and things in between.
Bottom line here with VPC: since we know performance is slow in general,
reduce your Virtual Memory overhead to as low as you can get away with: dont
let the page file size vary, and if you can turn it off.
