I actually have a similar issue sometimes with my 'native' windows machine,
with both Belkin and Dlink WiFi cards. I've actually found the PowerBook
with APX to be excellent (much more reliable). Have found VPC works without
a hitch in both shared and virtual network modes... however, I have founds
that I can't get the two machines to see each other... Safari won't display
a page on the IP address of the IIS running in Windows, and Explorer in VPC
won't display and Apache served page on the Mac. Ho hum !
