In my opinion 2000 is the fastest OS to use with VPC even with XP
stripped down. I only run a couple of Baseball stats and Baseball
Encyclopedia programs in Windows and nothing else - don't access the
Internet (except for Windows Update), don't check email, don't keep
and Address Book, but if you do these things maybe XP SP2 version's
heightened security would be something to think about.

What I've found about VPC is that a faster processor is by far the
single most important thing in running emulation software. My machine
is about a 4 year old Gigabit Ethernet Dual 450 - and nothing I did to
upgrade it made much difference until I replaced the old processor
with a 1.4GHz - I had maxed out the memory and installed a larger
HardDrive with not much to show for it - but the new processor did the
trick. Screen redraws and app launch times are now acceptable.

Another opinion of mine - not shared by everyone - is that Virtual PC
runs better on Mac OS 9 not Classic, but true OS 9 and preferably on
it's own separate HardDrive. Take printing for example - in VPC in OS
9 you install and USE the native Windows drivers for your printer,
that is you print directly from Windows to your USB printer. In OS X
though the Windows driver hands off, so to speak, to the Mac driver to
do the actual printing and it's my experience that something is always
lost in translation. One seems to have less control of things like
margins and font settings.
