To install USB device (a scanner EPSON Perfection 1250) with its disk and PC maintenance

To install USB device with its disk (a scanner EPSON 1250 Perfection)
and maintenance: Follow on.

This method is only done with the device disk, on the contrary with
the first method (printer ESON 760) where we were searching the last
drivers and the last software on Internet sites of the suppliers. It
can also apply for all other USB device (printer, external DD, Zip,
USB. key..).
Installing devices needs RAM. By using my scanner, VPC 6.1.1 asks,
with OS 9.2.2 and W 98 SE, 200 Mo of memory dedicated to the PC.

The RAM is the memory only for the PC
I also point out that the mouse, the keyboard, the disk drive and the
hub installed on Mac also make it go on Windows with the help of
Virtual PC. There is no need for an installation on Windows.

2 Installation or reinstallation of a USB scanner :
The 1st thing to do before installing USB devices with Virtual PC is
to update Windows imperatively. Even with a real PC, it's the same
thing.
For that in IE: bar menus then tools then Windows Update. And there,
update the critical updates only. And restart the PC (in the menus
control restart )
It is necessary of course also that in PC settings, USB will be
activated (edition then settings PC and USB then Click to select the
Enable USB check box.and to click on OK), and restart again the PC.
Each time you change the PC settings, you have to restart the PC in
order it recognizes the new setting. If not, you get the old setting
only.

It is necessary also that the scanner is turned off and not connected
either with the USB cable.

2-1 Installation of the software with the Disc provided by the
supplier.
It is enough to take the book delivered by the manufacturer and to
take his advice for the installation under Windows.
In my case, it is well specified it is necessary to install the
software or the software of the scanner initially and without turn on
the scanner and without connecting the USB cable. Let all the
installations of the software to be done, it can be very long
according to their number and their importance. At the end of the
installation, a window opens with the file which contains all the
elements software of the scanner. If the help, say restart by pushing
the button of start, don't do that. Only this, the PC requires to be
restart (in the VPC menus control then restart). If your PC doesn't
require restart, restart the PC( in the VPC menus control then
restart). It's compulsory. If not, the software is not installed on
the PC. And eject Disc (in the VPC menus Drives then eject disc).

2-2 Installation of the scanner itself:
It is enough to take the help book provided by the supplier and to
follow the advices for the installation of the scanner itself under
Windows:
- unbolt and turn on the scanner (it's switching on)
- connect cable USB
There is creation of the list of the pilots. There is a window saying
that a new device was detected. Then, it may be that Windows requires
to install a file missing for the final installation.
By default, Windows proposes to copy the files starting from A:\
which is the floppy. You could replace letter A by E and you get
then E:\ (the disk drive). Inserts Windows Disk, let it start and
turn.
Click on glancing on the Disk and we will search in the tree
initially the drive E:\, then Windows (in my case WIN98).
Now, it is written : E:\WIN98 in the window to copy the files from.
The missing file is installed. The scanner is completely recognized
now, it starts and the fluo lamp switch on under the cover.

2-2 Check the installation and the configuration.
>From now on: this is fundamental, to use a scanner USB (or all périph
USB installed on Windows) with Windows and Virtual PC, it is necessary
imperatively that this one will be turn off on the Mac side and turn
on it only when Windows desktop is well set i.e. that Windows has
finished working. But you can leave the USB cable on for the Mac
side and the Windows side.

 The scanner installation and its software can be long. It generates
temporary files.
I think that it is basic, before looking the help book and doing the
first digitalizations, to make a maintenance of the PC especially if
it has never be made.
It is necessary to make the maintenance of the PC as for a normal PC.
Here are what I do: Every month.
I:Temporary files to remove:
My computer then C: \
1 C:\Temp
2 C:\Windows\Temp
3 C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files
II: Search for the backup files with search in files *.msc and *.wbk
And remove those which are not necessary.
III: Tool for disc cleaning:
Start, programs, accessories, tools system, disc cleaning. Then
again cleaning of disc, and more options if necessary.
IV: For the downloaded softwares, remove the files with the extension
.zip
V: maintenance assistant:
start, programs, accessories, tools system, maintenance assistant.
VI: To improve the Windows starting use Easy Cleaner or msconfig.
( see lower).
 
I give the direct link for Easy Cleaner which must be used only for
the register, the unnecessary and starting. EasyCleaner is a utility
for PC. It makes it possible to accelerate the PC, to earn disk
space, to increase its utility by clearing the invalid entries of the
base of registry, the useless files, the obsolete links. A lot of
things are in the registry... And speed feels better after using it.
Use it only for the registry, the unnecessary files and for startup..

It's possible to launch the applications with the short cuts or alias.
 Thus it's posible to remove those which are automatically put by the
editors and which slow down the starting for the PC.
ms Config: "To speed the start up of Windows If you note a slow down
during the start up of your pc, or when you work with a software, it
is undoubtedly that your memory is embarassed by many programs, of
which some are probably useless. The faulty ones are the editors who
conceive their software so that they are set up automatically with the
start up of the pc. It is in particular the case of the programmes
of files multimedia reader, like Winamp or RealPlayer. Fortunately,
since Windows 98, it is very simple to decontaminate them using the
Msconfig utility, and it is without risk!
 1 - Click start. Click Run. Type msconfig in the Open box, and then
click OK.
 2 - In the window, choose the start up tab The utility then
presents the list of all the programs activated when Windows starts.
Strip the boxes corresponding to the software which you do not need.
Validate by clicking on button OK.
 3 - A window is open, indicating you that the modifications will be
taken into account when you restart your computer and propose to do it
immediately. Click on the button yes . With the restart of the PC,
you will be able to note that the launching of Windows is faster."

WARNING:
In Windows, hourglass pointer can disappear while Windows is working..

Don't fool around checking the USB VPC settings. Not rechecking the
boxes each time for the device.There is a bug in the help.

Some advices have been soon written in the first part, but it's also
for the persons who have never install any USB device.
