Only the Dell computers I own have a 'software trick' to get the
serial number, the 7-8 others don't.

The only serial number VPC has is the serial number of your license.

You could also use the Windows ID number, if the 'serial number' is
nothing that can be checked via the network.

Go the the System Properties and you'll find a long string of numbers.
This is what MS uses for support and is unique per Windows install.
