This is a common complaint with VPC and USB-to-serial port adapters. I
had a Belkin USB-to-serial port adapter that I had to baby along in
order to get it to work with Mac OS 9 and VPC 4. When I upgraded to Mac
OS X and VPC 5, it no longer worked (Belkin didn't provide any Mac OS X
drivers for the adapter and had no plans to at the time).
While I can't say with any knowledge that the IOGear adapter will work,
I can't say that it won't. What Mac OS are you running?

Yep. VPC 5 only allows for two COM ports. If your adapter is recognized
by VPC, it should be listed in the drop down box that appears in the COM
port section when setting up a VPC machine. If it doesn't show up there,
VPC will never recognize it.

I'm assuming this is set up within the IOGear driver software?

Will your set up work with a native PC setup? It might be helpful to see
if it would.
You could also obtain another USB-to-serial adapter and see if it works.
Most folks have pretty good luck with the Keyspan brand. Personally, I'd
stay away from Belkin as my experience with it was flaky at best.
