When I try to install or use my Epson R300 printer through USB, VIrtual
PC reproducibly causes a hard crash of OS X. The only way out is to
press the reset button or hold the power button.

iBook white 700 MHz with 640 M
MacOS 10.3.3
Virtual PC 6.1.1, Windows 98 SE, 256M of PC RAM configured.

Any attempt to restart Windows 98 in VPC with the Epson R300 enabled for
USB printing causes a hard crash of Mac OS X. The screen is dimmed, and
a multilingual message says that I must restart my computer. I have
uninstalled and reinstalled the Epson printer support several times,
always with identical results.

I can restart Windows 98 safely if I first uncheck the Epson printer
("USB2.0MFP") in the USB settings. I can then turn on the printer's USB
connection after Windows is running, and can use the Epson utility to
change printer properties. However when I try to print nothing comes out.

I was able to print through USB to my old HP Photosmart P1100, which has
died. I uninstalled its drivers during my attempts to get Epson working.

Here are some details of my installation attempts, also reported in
another message yesterday. I used the software CD that came with the
printer, and also tried the latest downloadable driver for Windows 98
from Epson's web site.

You are supposed to install Epson's Windows drivers with the printer not
connected. I do that. Then when told to, I plug in the printer. USB is
already enabled in VPC, and in the VPC USB settings an entry appears for
the printer, with its checkbox checked.

After a few seconds Windows sees the new USB hardware and starts its
usual New Hardware Detected routine, installing several drivers to deal
with the printer itself and its USB flash memory interface.

The final Windows dialog box for the driver installation does not go
away as I would have expected. I go on with the rest of the Epson
installation (manual, plus software for photos and for printing on CDs).
After the Epson installer exits, the Windows dialog box from the driver
installation is still sitting there.

At this point, according to Epson's guide, I should restart the PC. If I
do that with the printer enabled in the VPC USB settings, I get the
reproducible hard crash described above. If I first uncheck the Epson in
USB settings there is no crash but the printer will not print.

:-(.
