Really slow logon to W2003 from Mac

I have a Mac (I have tried several) with Mac OS 9.2.2 which takes a long
time (five minutes or so of the "Contacting <servername>" box) to log on to
W2003 through the Chooser. Logging on to Linux machines (which have
netatalk) from the Mac on the same Ethernet network is instant.

To get the MS UAM on the Mac, I had to go to the MS web site and download it
onto the Mac because prior to that the Mac always gave the "The user
authentication method required by this server can't be found." error message
(after five minutes). The second method (enable plaintext passwords) listed
in http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;834498 did not
work, so I could not get the MS UAM from the Microsoft UAM Volume.

Once the Mac has logged in, everything works properly. It's just that it
takes soooo long to log in.

Also, I don't seem to have AFP over TCP/IP like it says it should have in
the info about Services for Macintosh at
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/otherproducts/otherproducts.aspx?pid=windows2000sfm -
if I switch off AppleTalk on the Mac I cannot get a connection to the W2003
server by using its IP address, although I can still connect to the Linux
machines via IP address.

With Mac OS 10.2.8, it fails to log on at the authentication stage, claiming
"unknown user, invalid password or log on not enabled" and nothing appears
in the W2003 security log (I have set it to record logon/logoff events),
even though the same credentials do eventually get a logon with 9.2.2 (the
logon time is recorded as the time that it does actually log on).

Have I mis-configured something?

Andrew
