Yeah. They're working on that issue...
The new Mac Office Web Interface actually IS attempting to thread by
reference. The bug seems to be that every now and then it loses the plot
and a message doesn't get replicated onto the NNTP Server farm.
This is driving the vendor insane! Or rather, Microsoft is driving its
vendor insane because we keep whinging about it :-)
There's a new release in beta testing currently: I would expect them to
take it live later this week. They're actually working very hard to get it
right.
Fixes to Thread by Reference got dropped from the next release, in the
interests of getting some of the other higher-priority bugs fixed. But this
new vendor is very responsive, so we should not have to wait long.
In the meantime, I am using Entourage for these groups, so feel sorry for
me: it can't thread by reference at all! I thread by Subject and then by
Time, which works most of the time.
Ninety-something per cent of these posts are being generated by the Web
interface, which is a "blog" structure, so sorting by time will allow you to
see the sequence the originators are seeing.
Hopefully this new release will fix the missed posts bug, and things ought
to look a lot better.
Cheers

If you look at the posting volumes, you would see they're up by between 2
and ten times. And nearly 90 per cent of the posts are coming from the
'officeformac.com' server.
So I would gently suggest that Microsoft has made a massive improvement
already: these groups are now around ten times more successful than they
ever have been in delivering help to users.
Yeah, there's a few issues.
The show stopper for me is that Microsoft is completely screwing up
References headers, which makes it impossible for those of us with
enough of a clue to use a real news client to track all messages in a
given thread. Try back-tracking through a thread in a real news client
and you'll inevitably run into a message that can't be found as a result.
Microsoft is obviously not following section 2.2.5 of RFC 1036:
<http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc1036/rfc1036.html>
Or at the very best, they are following it only sometimes.
