Re: Cannot Open any Applics after 2004 Install

Hi Duncan:

If you didn't have Word X on your system, then your Normal template is a
file that is simply named "Normal" (no extension) and it would have been in
your Microsoft User Data folder, unless you moved it.

In which case, it is now on your desktop and safely out of harm's way.

We're getting awfully close to needing an Erase and Install. Things are
getting a bit mixed up :-)

Yes, Preview, Pages, and TextEdit will all open .doc files.

We would need the TEXT and the numbers in the error message befoe we can go
much further. We have two problems: "conflicts" and "missing bits".

It would be worth doing another install of Office 2008.

But first, I need to get those preferences out. Yes, I do mean the
/library/preferences folder, and I also mean the ~/Library/Preferences
folder and its subfolders.

So two folders: one is the "System" folder for all users. The ~ folder is
the one that begins with your user name. Those preferences are personal to
you.

I need you to remove every one of those with "microsoft" in its name. But
ONLY the Microsoft ones :-)

Keep an eye out for suggestions from the other people here too: this is
officially a "hard" problem, and I have no confidence in my solution to
this.

Hope this helps

Ok John, Ok....

Instead of installing a new user, I mistakenly changed my old user name and
password and then did archive and install instead. So this has confused me! So
I probably didn't create a new user just renamed the old one?

So I've got three library folders now. Locations are: System, previous system
1 and Mac HD.

I can't find normal template. What kind of file is it and where would it be.

Gone to ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (10) and removed
that file?
this file wasn't there and they were all (11) not (10)

what is a 'preference'..? Do you mean all files in the folders called
'Preferences'? Tried to do this. Sorry if i am not up to technical speed.
Haven't been using Mac much ;(

Microsoft user data - I have renamed this and dragged to Desktop.

So started in safe mode just to see. Still crash. By a crash I mean that
word/powerpoint/excel etc will not open and I get a microsoft error message.
The Mac doesn't 'hang' entirely :) I do not get this error opening Entourage,
which works.

Cheers,
Duncan,

Shall I create a new user and Archive and Install again instead of just
renaming!?

btw - Is there a way I can convert any files from .doc files as I can't open
anything at the mo as all my files now think they need Word - which I can't
access.

I'm sure we'll sort it!
