I had a crash last week, and had to restore my macbook pro to factory

reinstall.
The product key and CD key are two separate items. The CD key is needed to
re-install. When you install Office this key is stored in an invisible file.
If you have a backup of your User's folder, you can copy over the Microsoft
preferences and you shouldn't need to re-enter the key.
Using "Remove Office" removes this file.
