Re: Disk Full Error Message

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

That error simply means "Unable to complete the write to disk". The error
message is 20 years old, and when it was created, the most likely cause was
that the floppy disk was full :-)

These days, it's the equivalent of "The save failed and the server didn't
say why!" It's a file server deadlock.

Use "Save As" from the File menu and save the document as a new file name.

What is happening is that the server won't give Word the "file handle" it
needs to work with the file during the save process.

If this is happening on your local machine, the "file server" is Mac OS X.
Chances are, you haven't logged off for a few days and the system has "run
out" of file handles.

If you log off and log back on again, that will clear it. If you restart
the machine, that will also clear the temporary files. If you shut the
machine down, then count to ten, then restart, that fires the Unix
housekeeping tasks that clean the system up more extensively.

I always log off when I finish work for the day (no point in leaving an open
Internet connection alive for the hackers to try to break into...). This
enables Unix to run its housekeeping tasks, and I never see the problem.

I am currently looking for people to provide detailed information on this
issue. It appears to have become worse with OS 10.6.1, it looks like a
network system patch Apple put out for OS 10.5.8 has been omitted from OS
10.6. Microsoft is looking for it, but we need someone who can provide vast
amounts of detail to enable Microsoft to replicate the environment exactly
enough so the issue happens regularly enough for them to catch it in the
de-bugger.

Cheers

I just tripped across this error today. I have some 275 GB free. I even tried
an empty USB flash drive and no luck. Now, I have an important document, with
lots of changes, and no way to figure out how to save it. Autorecovery is also
complaining it can not save.

At least the document prints out.....

I'm running 10.6.1
