Hi Tim:
Yeah, the 2007 interface is a PITA. If you spend a bit more time with it,
you will eventually find it very quick for what it is designed for.
But it's still slow and fiddly for professional documents.
The people who designed it cannot wrap their tiny minds around the fact that
"most" users out there these days know what they're doing. The Ribbon is
designed entirely for users who don't. It's designed to lead beginning
users on a voyage of discovery and self-expression.
Sadly, it's very difficult to learn, because stuff keeps moving around and
coming and going.
And professional users simply don't work that way!! We know exactly what we
want to do, and how to do it, before we open the document. And the ribbon
is not good at that.
Unfortunately the designers don't work for Word, or even Office; and they
have no clue: so we're stuck with it. And I am sure they will IMPOSE it on
the Macintosh Business Unit also, since the golden rule is "They who have
the gold make the rules", and they have the gold...
Sorry about that!

HOWEVER, I just opened this document in a trial version of Word 2007 we
have on our PC. IT'S TOTALLY DIFFERENT!!! I can't find a lot of the basics
Well, you're right on 2 counts... I think :-) :
First, Office 2007 does employ a radicaly different UI than any preceding
version, PC or Mac. Even the features which are identical will be found in
different areas of the Ribbon UI that may not seem harmonious with where
they would be found in a version that uses the "Classic" UI [as it's now
called].
I have to say that I too (like Kenny) found the Word 2007 interface to
be unusable (and irritating because I needed to do something in a
hurry). It was with trepidation that I down loaded the Office 2008 Trial
and with utter relief found Word 2008 to be as previous versions, with
some improvements.
If you're in a position to give feedback to Microsoft, tell 'em a
definite "thumbs down" for the new Word 2007 interface.
