Re: Word 2008 unable to save .doc files on close (working on network share)

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Saving locally is the only way to truly eliminate this problem.

The steps you have taken will minimise it, but not completely eliminate it.

After three versions of Microsoft Word with this bug, we have given up oping
that they will fix this issue :-)

Cheers

I recently upgraded a client from Office 2004 to 2008 as part of their move to
an Exchange Server. Ever since the upgrade, they have frequently been
experiencing issue while attempting to save .doc & .xls documents stored on
their Windows 2003 file server.

Staff open & work on files directly off of the server. They typically open an
old document (.doc/.xls) that they use as a rough guide, choose SaveAs to
create a new copy & then work on their new document (still .doc/.xls, however)

They save the documents repeatedly while working on them, but at some point
during the process, typically on attempting to close the document, Word errors
out, reporting it is unable to save the document - sometimes it claims the
disc is damaged, sometimes it claims the user doesn't have permissions, or
variations on this issue. Choosing Save or SaveAs from the file menu produces
the same errors.

Staff are running OSX4.11 with Office v12.1.4.

I have given all users new & unique UIDs, cleared caches, deleted .plist files
& repaired disks - all to no avail (although since having done these
troubleshooting steps, the frequency of the occurrances has diminished.) I
have had luck saving the document as a .docx file to the users desktop, rather
than on the server.

I have suggested that staff save as .docx & work from their desktops, rather
than directly from the network. Changing user workflows is difficult &
unwieldy, however, especially since none of these issues existed under 2004
(well, none were reported, at least).

Suggestions?
