What you're "missing" is that the Format> Background options are intended
for on-screen viewing & web pages - by default they do not print, so they
aren't included in PDF output either.
You can use Word> Preferences> Print to select the Include Background Colors
& Images option, but there's no guarantee that the finished product will
turn out as you'd like. Most of the built-in Textures & other effects are
insufficient resolution for printed output and it may not apply to the edge
of the page on 1 or more sides.
Word's internal Print Preview may still not show the Background but when you
go to the Print dialog the background will be visible.

I have a multipage document that I have worked on and placed it on a
colored/textured background.
However, before distributing the document I need to save it as a pdf, but when
I do the background does not appear and the layout is on a plain white
background.
Am I missing something to make my texturized background appear on the pdf?
Thanks for you help.
