Re: can't open Word files

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

Thanks, Guys! No, I hadn't noticed. I'm lost as a goose with these
newsgroups. There were thousands of them that I had to choose from and I
never saw a PC/Mac tag.

I am so sorry. Thank you for letting me know.

You're obviously using a Windows system but you've posted to the newsgroup
for Word on the Mac. You can get to the PC Word groups from the following
link but be sure to supply version specifics when you post:

Hi,

From Word, I click on Open File, find the directory, find the file(s), and
click to open. I get an error message that says, "cannot open file, path is
too long". One particular directory with 8 files is the main problem. 6 out
of the 8 files will not open.

I went to Windows (XP) file system on C:\ drive and found the files. I tried
to open it, but it wouldn't (same message). I tried to "rename" but that
option is grayed out.

I opened IE and chose the Open option, and some of the files would open, but
others would not.

I tried to open in Notepad, but I got "permission denied". I went to the
permissions and made sure I had full access. Still they will not open.

I moved the offending directory up the tree (as it were) so that the file
path would be shorter, checked the permissions, and tried to rename. Still,
the files won't open.

I then moved the files to my desktop, checked permissions, tried renaming,
but still will not open.

I have had this problem before, but I could change the file name or rename
and I could open.

HELP! Any other suggestions?
