Re: not enough memory or disk space to complete operation.

OK, let's start from scratch :-)

Go to Word Help, then select Check for Updates [while there you might do
well to set it for "Automatically" - perhaps Monthly] to retrieve the 12.1.2
update. Once that's applied Quit Word & run Disk Utility - Repair Disk
Permissions, shut down the Mac for a few minutes, the start up & launch
Word. If the problems continue we'll have to go a bit further.

FWIW, the issues you're experiencing are not universal nor directly
attributable to Word 2008 itself. The source may take a bit of effort to
identify, but shouldn't be particularly difficult to resolve.

As for the attachment itself: Is the other system using the same version of
the same email client (Eudora)? Are you attempting to open the attachment by
double-clicking an icon in the email message?

Navigate to the file in a Finder window, select it then key Command+I (Get
Info). Reply back with the descriptive information in the General (Kind),
Open With & Ownership/Permissions sections. Also, try opening the file in
all of the following 3 ways & indicate what happens for each of the 3
attempts:

1- In a Finder Window Double-Click the file icon,

2- In a Finder window Control/Right-Click the icon, select Open With, choose
Microsoft Word,

3- In Word go to File> Open, navigate to & Open the file

Apparently the update was installed correctly. When I checked the version it
comes up as 12.1.1. If there is yet another update I am unaware of it. I use
Eudora for e-mail. As for the attachment I was trying to open, I have no idea
how it was created, only that I can open it successfully from a Power Book lap
top using the same OSX and Office-X. This Intel Mac is running 10.4.11. I have
Leopard installed on another disk but have enough problems at the moment
without re-doing all of my set up info yet again.
