How did you go about inserting the XE codes? Do the other marks toggle?

They "should" hide when you toggle the non-printing characters (¶) if you
used the Insert> Index & Tables method or Command+F9 to insert the codes. If
you simply typed the braces ({}) they aren't codes.

Please provide more descriptive information as well as exact version &
whether this I the case in just the one doc or whether it occurs in all.
