John,
I have seen that document before and ran the command to get the user's uid.
The uid was not the standard 50x. She is logging into the mac via AD and I
believe her UID is the AD uid. Should I still try to change her UID?
Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan:.
This is almost certainly an "Access Control" issue.
OS 10.5 uses Access Control Lists to manage user privileges. The earlier
versions did not. The cleanest fix is to set up ACLs for your users.
There's a good discussion here:

Not sure if this trend is still active, but we are having this issue too. I
have a few clients running Mac OS X 10.5.4 and office 12.1.1. They can NOT
open, edit and save .doc on the network. They can however open, edit and
save a .docx off the network. Any ideas?

Without your software version information, this comment doesn't really have
much meaning.
If you are using Office 2008 on OS 10.5.1, they are working on a fix that
should be with us shortly.

The only thing I found that works, and this was by accident, is if I am
connected to the network drive using two different computers, but the same
user, the problem goes away.
Here, I save docs to a 750 Gb network drive connected to my Airport Extreme
router. If I try to open and then save change to a doc on the drive in
Word,
I get the error. However, if I connect to the drive with both my desktop
Mac
and my laptop, no problems.

Almost every time I save a document, or perform a "save as..." to make a
new
copy, I get the error message:
"You cannot save while the file is in use by another process. Try saving
the
file with a new name.
(Word Work File D_xxxxxxxxxx.tmp)"
I'm saving the files as ".docx" format. This similar behavior occured with
the Word 2004 versioned files. The files are saved to a shared network hard
drive, but file that are on my client (local) drive have the same results.
Anyone experience this behavior? Looking for a solution before I throw Word
out the window with the bath water!
Thanks
