In OS 10.3 and 10.4, by default, the operating system takes precedence and
allocates the F9 key with modifiers to invoke one of the Exposé features. I
don't have OS 10.5, though.
I discuss various strategies for dealing with this on page 21 of some notes
on the way I use Word for the Mac, titled "Bend Word to Your Will", which
are available as a free download from the Word MVPs' website
(http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Bend/BendWordToYourWill.html).

I actually don't think the system did hijack option-F9, as my machine is
pretty uncustomized right now and it works here--someone probably did
that on his machine a while back. But here's instructions for
reassigning the field commands in Word:

(which, actually, CyberTaz--there's an error in the Win Keys
list--what's the WinWord command to lock a field?)
