Word has created a paragraph border, which is why you cannot simply select
the line and delete it. Place your cursor just above the line, then go to
Format>Borders and Shading... and select None.
To deactivate that option, go to Tools>AutoCorrect and uncheck the box that
reads Symbol characters (--) with symbols (?) under the AutoFormat As You
Type tab.

I typed dashes (-) from one margin to the next, hit enter and it created a
