Hi. I have Office for Max v.X. runing on OS X 10.4.9 on a MacBookPro
with dual-core procesor. I need to open ".docx" files from a client.
I read in a forum that I should updated by downloading and
installing OfficeX-1019UpdateEN.dmg and
OfficeOpenXMLConverter020EN.dmg so I would be able to open ".docx"
files created on MS Office 2007, .

What you read in a forum is dead wrong. There is no mechanism for either
v.X or 2004 to open .docx directly. There *won't* be for v.X, and if any
built-in conversion for 2004 is added via update, it will be added
*after* 2008 is released.

The Office Open XML Converter is a standalone application. Open it, and
drag .docx files to the application window to convert them to .doc files.

After the update, I tried to open Word. I got a screen asking for
name, company and product key. But, even though I have the key, when
I try to enter it I get a message saying my key is not valid.

You don't say what version you updated from, but I suspect your best bet
is to run the Remove Office application, reinstall, then update from
there.

I called Microsoft Tech Support and the tech confirmed my key was
valid. But they won't help me because they no longer support this
product (Office for Mac .X). Does any Mac genius out there know how I
can open ".docx" files without buying Office 2004 -- which is about
to be replaced by Office 2008?

For now, use the standalone converter, the free NeoOffice, or Apple's
latest version of iWorks/Pages to convert .docx to .doc.

Please note that Microsoft pre-sales just told me that there will be
NO upgrade offered to Office 2004 owner. Ouch!

That would be highly surprising, not to mention suicidal from MacBU.
Don't know who or what "Microsoft pre-sales" is, but I suspect whoever
they are, they were experiencing a craniorectal inversion at the time.
