When using word 2004 for mac, the onscreen keyboard viewer refuses to
switch languages. This is most certainly a Word issue as switching to
text edit, a web browser, or any other application shows an updated
keyboard viewer with the correct language.

does anyone know if this is a common issue, and how to fix it?

Not just English. US English!
It *is* a common issue.
I know of no fix.

Note that the keyboard stays in the chosen language, it is only the
viewer that goes neo-colonialist imperialist aggressor on you.
The work around is to click on the desktop to get your viewer in the
right language, then back to Word, then type the real key suggested by
the viewer.

It is a plot by the Department of Homeland Security to collect all ten
of your fingerprints without you flying through a US airport.

OK, I'm only joking. It is nothing more than evidence of the shoddy
quality of the current Microsoft Office.

One hopes, as usual, that the new one will fix more bugs than it
creates. It becomes tiring listening to the misanthropes who assert it
is a conscious business decision to do the opposite.

thanks,
there is one other thing though. The version I am using was a student-
teacher version.
On a different computer I have the full professional version
installed, and there doesn't seem to be any issue with the keyboard
viewer. Also, the other computer is a pre-intel imac, while the
problem is on a new intel imac. Do you think the version of word is
making a difference, or the type of computer?

Aha! A very good question. I have one of each Mac here. The US keyboard
problem only appears on the Intel Mac.

Others who know, assert there is no difference between the standard and
student and teacher versions other than the spectacularly different
value for money.

I hereby apologise for my smartarse{1] remark about Microsoft software
quality. It would appear to be a Rosetta problem of Apple's.

1. Would that be Smartass in US English?

thanks for checking that out.
I'm not sure what rosetta is.
The keyboard does work properly in textedit and firefox.
was office 2004 for mac pre-intel? I don't remember.
does knowing that it's an intel issue help towards finding a solution?
Will office for mac have a new version soon?
sorry about the questions. I'm just very frustrated since a lot of my
work involves word processing in alternate languages. languages like
japnese are ok since the input is phonetic, but others like hebrew
need the keyboard (or for me to memorize the keys). there are also
some strange issue with the right to left input for hebrew which i
don't even want to think about
