Hi Robert -

Vertical toolbar? Are you referring to the Formatting Palette? If so, what
you're witnessing is not a bug nor is there any need to fix it. It *is* an
intended feature over which you have full control, and many people like the
ability to have less hidden while the Palette is displayed but not currently
in use. Change the settings to suit your own preferences.

At the bottom edge of the Palette click the small black triangle & select
Hide When Inactive to clear the check... Or go one step further by choosing
Customize Formatting Palette instead. Adjust the settings as you wish.

If you mean something other than this you'll need to be more explicit and
specify which version of Word, OS X and type of Mac in order for someone to
know what the problem is.

BTW: Rants & threats do no good here. None of the participants are MS
employees and - no offense - we really couldn't care less what software you
choose to use or why:)

This must be a bug.

This has been posted by someone 2004 and someone at MS acknowledged
that they are working on it. Now we are in 2007. Hey, is such an
annoyance so unimportant or so difficult to fix that it takes three
years? I might have a look at NeoOffice to see if that works better.
