I'm not sure what you mean by "memory, ram etc." as memory & RAM are the
same thing. Also, "plenty" isn't a measurement system value I'm familiar
with:) Less than 1 GB may hinder speed & more may be recommendable depending
on the nature of your files & their content.
However, based on what you describe the first thought is to make sure Office
is fully updated - current version is 11.3.4. Also, download & apply the OS
X 10.4.9 COMBO updater from the Apple site (not the one Software Update
delivers), then run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions. See if
performance improves.

I too have sluggish behavior in Word. I run Office for Mac 2004, 11.3 on
a
PowerPC G5, OSX, version 10.4.9. I have plenty of memory, ram etc. This
appears to have started with either one of the system upgrades or
Microsoft
upgrades. It is very time consuming and does not seem to matter what else
is
running (even if Word is the only program running) or how soon after a
re-start.
