Choose "any printer" in Page Set-Up and try a print to PDF.
Same error
Restore your backup of 10.4.8 and try again. Something is almost
certainly borked with your upgrade to 10.4.9
I have just tried a complete Combo Update to 10.4.9. Same error.
Only Office applications fail to print. I can print from TextEdit,
TextWrangler, Mail.app, FireFox, iCal, and Photoshop.
Did you ever trash your normal template?
Yes, after doing this and removing preference files, Word takes a
looooong time to start up, and it still won't print.
Oh dear! Is the printer hanging off a PC somewhere?
I have tried printers over AppleTalk, printers over Bonjour, and
Windows sharing printers, as well as a directly (USB) connected
printer.
What is common between all 6 Macs that might make them different from
all other Macintoshes
They are all new Intel Mac laptops, factory installed with 10.4.6,
upgraded through 10.4.8 to 10.4.9. There were two different Office
Installation media used, 3 on a Student multi-license kit, the
remainder on Open Charity licenses.
You might consider for a moment that it is telling you the truth.
I briefly considered that, but I still suspect my computer is lying to
me, cause it doesn't think I can handle the truth.

I have tried all the Print troubleshooting steps and have come to
believe that there is an incompatibility between Word 2004 and OS X
10.4.9.
Certainly not. Works fine here. And just about everywhere else. Imagine
the uproar!

Before you do..
What happens when you print to PDF from Word after selecting "Any
Printer" in page set-up?
I have completely updated Word, using all the updates available on the
Microsoft Mac site.
I have un-installed and re-installed my Printer and drivers using the
newest available from the manufacturers website (tried no less than 5
different printers)
I have attempted to Preview the print job, then print from Preview.app
I have attempted to Print to PDF
I have removed all the preference files relating to "Word" and "Print"
in my ~/Library/Preferences folder
I have rebooted numerous times
Did you ever trash your normal template?
All of the above steps still concluded in the same useless error
message:
Word cannot print due to a problem with the current printer.
Make sure you have a printer selected in the Print Center. You may
need to print again or adjust your printer settings.
You might consider for a moment that it is telling you the truth.
Choose "any printer" in Page Set-Up and try a print to PDF.
Also of interest, the "Quick Preview" area in the print dialog is
blank, and shows 0/0 pages, regardless of the length of the document.
I represent 6 Mac users of an otherwise Windows-driven organization,
all of us having the same issue after upgrading to 10.4.9.

all other Macintoshes (by 5 o'clock this afternoon [1])?
1. Sorry. I have been reading Kipling's Just So Stories to my
grand-daughter. That just slipped out. ;-)
