Actually there are "some" applications such as web browsers and such that optionally allow you to use 96 dpi (I've tried it in FireFox, SeaMonkey and such. Never saw that had much affect.
As for word Documents because I maintain a website for an Association I belong to I must deal with documents sent from Word PC and if there is a pdf sent along when I open the document in Word2004 Mac there is much pagination going on. I have to fiddle with the fonts to get it to show the same on the screen.
Why do they send both? often They haven't spell or Grammar checked before hand so I have to do that then create a corrected copy and create a new PDF.
Up until very recently (last two or three years) LCD screens were available for Mac's and the graphics cards were set with the old system.
I got my LCD screen and The DVI Graphics card long after my loading on Wood 2004.
I expect with the Intel systems thats 96 would be default.
Even when you buy adobe fonts today you get them either for Mac or PC.

I did my literature survey in this way - worked on both PC and Mac and
worked fine. The only thing to be careful is the font, which will

Just want to add that if you make a special paragraph style for your
picture make sure spacing isn't set to exactly, otherwise you will see
only 1 row from your picture, but it can be easy repaired by setting
the paragraph spacing to something different.
